Smart Ways To Style Your Sideboard

Sideboards were initially designed to be used as service areas in dining rooms. The sideboard, however, is a versatile piece of furniture that evolved to hold its own in the living room, dining room, hallway, and even the kitchen. In the living room or family area, it can be used as a TV console with storage, or to display artwork, ceramics, books, collectables, and indoor plants. In the dining area, one can store and display crockery and cutlery, candle stands, exquisite china, or serve a buffet. The sideboard becomes multi-functional in the bedroom and can be used as a decorative piece or a dressing table. With a plethora of ways to style your sideboard here are a few tips to get you started.

Create Balance In The Arrangement

A minimalist and symmetrical arrangement on your sideboard can look artistic and sophisticated. Try using lamps with brass stands on each end for a classic look on a long sideboard. The trick is to stand back and view your arrangement to check visually if it weighs equally on both sides.

Make The Most Of Wooden Finishes

Mid-century modern sideboards such as our Aruba Dark Blue TV stand and Bay View Console with their clean stark lines and modern design shift the focus to the quality of their wood. Devoid of superfluous design, they fit well in cozy and intimate spaces. Style these pieces with framed photographs or accent pieces that invite the viewer to step closer and admire the wooden finish as well.

Integrate Practicality With Style

In a dining area where the sideboard will also double up as a buffet or a bar, it is best to avoid ornaments and displays that need to be moved around. Place a single flower arrangement in the center and the dinnerware or dishes on either side. Alternatively, place practical pieces that look decorative on the console. These can include napkin holders, cookie jars, quirky bar tools, and candle stands that can be incorporated into the dining experience.

Go Eclectic

Vintage, rustic, and farmhouse consoles are often the perfect setting for an eclectic collection of collectables or fabrics. In this situation, you are not looking for symmetry, but rather organized chaos. The trick here is to choose unique pieces that hold the viewer’s eye for more than a few seconds, becoming interesting conversation starters.

Stage Art

Consoles set the perfect stage for hanging art. Your captivating artwork will take center stage but you must give it additional support. Place delicate pieces, small lamps, succulents, or books on the surface that will support the display - not take away from it. A hand-woven table runner can also complement your art piece.

Flower Vases

You can never go wrong with flowers. A sideboard is an excellent place for both large floral displays and small fresh flower arrangements. The type of flowers and style of display can create different moods from playful to romantic without too much effort. Flowers can also be complemented with candles, incense holders, potpourri bowls, photo frames, and decor pieces.

Books

Use books to decorate your console in hallways, the living room, and the bedroom. Book collections reflect your personality and interests. Use books to create a color theme on your console. Combine with decorative bowls and lamps. Stack them in small piles or leave a single book open on a folding lectern.

Mirrors

The sideboard in the hallway can quickly become a cluttered dumping area for keys and bags. Style this surface with pretty ceramic bowls that double up as storage spaces. Use the power of three which works well when grouping things. Hang a gilt-framed mirror over the sideboard to add to the glamor. A mirror will also reflect light and make your space look larger besides letting you check yourself on the way out the door.

Sideboards can play a big role in setting the mood of a room. Style your surfaces to bring beauty and personality to your spaces while also being functional and suitable to your specific needs. Check out our range of sideboards at The Furniture Source to furnish your home.
